Denistone RLS
Project : Harry Hamor of Gibbon Hamor Advisory came to us in 2018 with an approval for an architecturally designed commercial build – a New Aquatic Academy for RLS (Royal Life Saving) at Denistone East Public School.
We were originally subcontracted for the Design Development and Detailing of the facility, and later had a leading role during Construction in regard to maintaining the quality of the design and coordination of consultants.
There was originally an open air pool on the site. This was fully demolished and the site reinstated. The replacement is a new 2 level structure incorporating carparking, Entry and Admin facilities, a fully enclosed 25 m Pool and associated pool treatment functions, Change rooms and Staff and Training Rooms. The pool is a specialised training facility, being only 1.2 m deep. It is kept at a substantially warmer temperature than normal pools so that staff can stay in there for many hours
The issue of condensation is paramount. The Glulam timber beams are selected for their ability to deal with the very moist atmosphere and for their sustainability. The interior finishes are specifically specified so not to rust – Face Brickwork, Glass in Anodised framing, Aluminium detailing. Natural ventilation creates a more user-friendly environment. Energy efficiency and passive thermal control are built into the design, with double glazing and awnings over the windows. The entire roof is covered with Photovoltaic collectors. 2400 l of On-site stormwater detention is provided.
The project was opened by the Hon. Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning and the Hon. Member for Ryde 18 June 2021.
