Architecturally designed renovation of  heritage listed former substation

Phillpot St, Marrickville

Project : An approval was granted for architecturally designed renovation of the Heritage listed substation along with apartment development of the former Globe Mills Factory by TDK Architects. The original approval for a third level was not enacted by the original owners due to their resources. A following owner purchased the property and wished to fulfil the original design.

We were introduced to the Owner via the Builder and undertook the Design Development and Detailing to achieve the CC and Construction packages and with some Site role.

A significant feature of the design is the open terrace roof. Given the property is built to all 4 boundaries, the only private open space could be found on the roof. This also opened the vista up to the adjacent heritage listed ex. factory and neighbourhood views. To access this, a new stair was inserted that had to independent of the existing structure. There were significant building challenges on this site, which awarded MLP Co a MBA nomination.
