Renovations and additions to a Federation House
Mort St, Randwick
Project : We had just obtained an Approval for a small semi in Bronte for Lucy and Peter when they announced they were selling it, and had bought a substantially larger home in Randwick North that also needed renovating (again).
The problem with the relatively recent renovation was it had a very low ceiling, for a large open space that felt claustrophobic, and relied purely on a central skylight to bring any natural light in. The client wished to increase the light and spaciousness, and the concept of the north facing clerestory and skillion evolved. The existing external walls of the previous renovation were reused and a lightweight floating roof added over. Given the large spans, steel was elected for the preliminary structure, which we then refined to create the thin edges of the skillion roof.
The front of the house maintained its Federation character. Those rooms were reconfigured so that all Living was contained at the rear, leading that leads into the garden and pool. A self-contained Studio and lock up garage are accessed via the rear lane.
